Latex has been making waves in the fashion industry lately and for a good reason! The days when latex was considered a clothing material for the fetish scene only are long gone. People are starting to notice the incredible versatility of latex and how it can be used to create a wide range of looks, from sleek and sexy to streetwear - latex has it all.
In this blog post, I would like to present a few reasons to start wearing latex today:
1. Defines your shape, hides imperfections
Latex has become so popular in the fashion scene thanks to its ability to adjust to your body shape, creating a 'second skin' effect which is both flattering and comfortable. This way latex will hide all the, so-called, imperfections, whether it's cellulite or scars in no time. Latex also adapts to your body temperature within seconds and in ideal weather conditions you will feel naked even when you are fully clothed.
2. Makes you look gorgeous and feel extraordinary
Latex is known for reflecting lights, giving it an almost futuristic look - perfect for avant-garde designs. Plus, it's incredibly durable and can last for years with proper care.

The biggest reason, however, why latex has become so popular in fashion lately is due to its ability to create an impressive look. Whether you are looking to turn heads on the runway or simply want to stand out from the crowd, latex has the power to make a bold statement. So if you're looking to add some edge to your wardrobe, consider incorporating some latex pieces.
3. A 100% natural, vegan and sustainable material
Most people mistakenly think that latex is a man-made material that is not good for the environment. However, the opposite is true. Did you know that ancient civilizations like Aztecs, Maya and Olmec produced the first ever latex products 3000 years ago?
How so? Turns out latex is a natural material obtained from a tree called the 'rubber tree', which mainly grows in Central America. You can learn more about the history of latex in a separate article. These days, latex still gets obtained in the original ways. Despite successful attempts to produce synthetic rubber, latex clothing from the house of Kirsten Vaams is made exclusively from 100% natural rubber. This brings us to the next point: did you know that if you leave your latex clothing in an abandoned forest for six months straight, you will not find it in the same shape and form?
Latex is a biodegradable material that naturally breaks down due to sun exposure, high temperatures, dryness and humidity if not sufficiently nourished with silicone-based latex polish or silicone oil. This does not mean that you have to worry about buying a Kirsten Vaams garment if you take good care of it with a polish. However, in my experience, you can lose a glove under the couch in your living room, only to find it two years later shattered into a thousand pieces when you touch it. Therefore, it is extremely important to keep up with the maintenance of this material. Which is not as time-consuming as it might seem at first. You can read more about latex maintenance in the Taking care of latex article.
It is no secret that the fashion industry is the fourth largest polluter on the planet and is linked to slavery and inhumane living conditions. This was one of the main reasons why I chose to make latex clothing over prioritising other materials and fabrics - latex clothing belongs to slow fashion. At Kirsten Vaams, each piece is created with an extraordinary emphasis on every detail, with love and care.
4. Makes you sweat and burn fat easily
Although many people consider this a rather negative feature of latex, there are ways to turn it into an advantage. Indeed, skin does not breathe under latex therefore after wearing latex for long hours, you will sweat at some point. The dried latex fluid does not contain any pores through which your sweat could drain. It creates a suction on the latex on the skin just like a vacuum does. This might sound troublesome but in reality does not cause a problem.
This could be great for losing some weight if you wish to. For example, you could easily implement your latex leggings into your workout routine! Check out our Gym Wear category if you are interested.
5. It is waterproof and very easy to wash
In 1823 Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh invented the rubberized fabric that was later used to make long raincoats. This is how the first mainstream latex clothing was created, which resulted in the birth of the fetish scene. Kirsten Vaams Haus offers a wide range of outerwear and jackets suitable for rainy weather, check out our Cold Rainy Days category.
